P1NP (Procollagen Type I N‑Propeptide)

P1NP is the N‑terminal propeptide cleaved during type I collagen synthesis by osteoblasts. It reflects bone formation and is widely used to assess bone turnover and to monitor response to osteoporosis treatments (anabolic and anti‑resorptive). Compared with osteocalcin, P1NP offers better analytical stability and standardisation, and is endorsed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) as a reference bone formation marker.
