GI Pathogens Profile – Multiplex PCR Stool Test
The GI Pathogens Profile is an advanced molecular stool test designed for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of gastrointestinal infections. Using multiplex PCR technology, this panel identifies a broad range of bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens in a single sample.
Unlike traditional stool culture or microscopy, PCR-based detection allows for earlier and more accurate identification of pathogens, including organisms that are difficult to culture or intermittently shed.
Why this is not a basic stool test
Routine stool tests often rely on culture or microscopy, which may miss pathogens due to low sensitivity or delayed growth. This panel uses multiplex PCR to detect pathogen DNA directly, significantly increasing diagnostic accuracy.
- Simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens in one analysis
- Higher sensitivity compared to culture-based methods
- Detection of bacteria, viruses, and parasites in a single test
- Faster turnaround time for clinical decision making
This makes it particularly valuable in both acute infections and persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms.
Analytes Included
| Category | Pathogens Detected | Clinical Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Bacterial Pathogens | Salmonella spp. Shigella spp. Campylobacter spp. Clostridioides difficile (toxin genes) Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) |
Common causes of acute diarrhea, foodborne illness, and post-infectious IBS |
| Viral Pathogens | Norovirus Rotavirus Adenovirus (enteric) |
Frequent causes of acute gastroenteritis, especially in outbreaks |
| Parasitic Pathogens | Giardia lamblia Cryptosporidium spp. Entamoeba histolytica |
Associated with chronic diarrhea, travel-related illness, and malabsorption |
Clinical Value
This panel provides rapid and reliable identification of infectious agents that may not be detected by conventional stool testing. It is particularly useful in acute gastrointestinal illness, persistent unexplained symptoms, and cases where rapid diagnosis is required to guide treatment.
Early and accurate detection of pathogens may help prevent complications, reduce unnecessary treatments, and support targeted therapeutic strategies.
Who may benefit
- Patients with acute diarrhea, abdominal pain, or gastrointestinal distress
- Individuals with persistent or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms
- Post-travel illness or suspected foodborne infection
- Patients with symptoms following antibiotic use
- Cases where infection needs to be excluded before further testing
Sample Type
Stool sample collected at home using a dedicated collection kit.
Turnaround Time
Approximately 5 to 7 working days after sample arrival at the laboratory.
