What it measures:
Urinary metabolites reflecting exposure to PAHs.
Why it matters:
PAHs are produced by incomplete combustion and are associated with oxidative stress and increased long-term health risk. Clinically relevant in smokers, heavy traffic exposure, wood-burning environments, or frequent grilled/smoked food intake.
Common exposure sources:
Cigarette smoke, wood stoves, diesel exhaust, urban pollution, grilled/smoked foods, occupational combustion exposure.
Sample & methodology
- Sample: Spot urine (first morning preferred)
- Method: GC or LC-MS/MS (quantitative)
- Reporting: Creatinine-corrected concentrations with interpretive comments
